The TSRI is a nine-item artefact-centric scale that evaluates how effectively an interactive system supports personal, data-driven reflection. It was developed to fill a gap in the field: prior reflection scales measured a person’s reflective capacity rather than the qualities of a technology. The TSRI enables researchers and designers to rapidly compare prototypes intended to support reflection.
Insight — the extent to which the system provides users with information that is insightful, inspires new perspectives, or prompts changes in behaviour.
Exploration — the ease and enjoyment of exploring personal data in the system. Seen as a necessary condition for reflection on personal data.
Comparison — the social dimension: whether the system supports reflection in relation to others.
Participants respond on a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree, 7 = Strongly Agree). There are no reversed items.
| # | Item | Subscale |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Using the system has led to a wake-up call to make changes in my life | Insight |
| Q2 | As a result of using the system, I have changed how I approach things | Insight |
| Q3 | Using the system gives me ideas on how to overcome challenges | Insight |
| Q4 | I enjoy exploring my data with the system | Exploration |
| Q5 | The system makes it easy to get an overview of my personal data | Exploration |
| Q6 | The system makes it easy to review my long-term personal data | Exploration |
| Q7 | I reflect on my data in the system with others | Comparison |
| Q8 | The system helps me to discuss my data with others | Comparison |
| Q9 | The system makes me think about how my personal data relates with that of others | Comparison |
